A Cartan-eilenberg Approach to Homotopical Algebra
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we propose an approach to homotopical algebra where the basic ingredient is a category with two classes of distinguished morphisms: strong and weak equivalences. These data determine the cofibrant objects by an extension property analogous to the classical lifting property of projective modules. We define a Cartan-Eilenberg category as a category with strong and weak equivalences such that there is an equivalence of categories between its localisation with respect to weak equivalences and the relative localisation of the subcategory of cofibrant objets with respect to strong equivalences. This equivalence of categories allows us to extend the classical theory of derived additive functors to this non additive setting. The main examples include Quillen model categories and categories of functors defined on a category endowed with a cotriple (comonad) and taking values on a category of complexes of an abelian category. In the latter case there are examples in which the class of strong equivalences is not determined by a homotopy relation. Among other applications of our theory, we establish a very general acyclic models theorem.

Algebraic cohomology: the early days
This paper will survey the various definitions of homology theories from the first Eilenberg-Mac Lane theories for group cohomology through the Cartan-Eilenberg attempt at a uniform (co-)homology theory in algebra, cotriple cohomology theories and the various acyclic models theorems that tied them all together (as much as was possible).
متن کاملCartan-eilenberg Cohomology and Triples
In their classic book, Cartan and Eilenberg described a more-or-less general scheme for defining homology and cohomology theories for a number of different kinds of algebraic structure, using a general theory of augmented algebras. Later, in his doctoral dissertation, Beck showed how to use the theory of triples to derive a very different and completely general scheme for doing the same thing. ...
متن کاملThe Maurer-Cartan structure of BRST differential
In this paper, we construct a new sequence of generators of the BRST complex and reformulate the BRST differential so that it acts on elements of the complex much like the Maurer-Cartan differential acts on left-invariant forms. Thus our BRST differential is formally analogous to the differential defined on the BRST formulation of the Chevalley-Eilenberg cochain complex of a Lie algebra. Moreov...

which are well related and allow efficient calculation of the R/I-algebra Tor∗ (R/I, R/I s). The resolution we construct may well be known, however lacking a convenient reference we give the details. Our immediate motivation lies in topological calculations that are part of joint work with A. Jeanneret and A. Lazarev [1, 2], but we believe this algebraic construction may be of wider interest. متن کاملBrown Representability and the Eilenberg-watts Theorem in Homotopical Algebra
It is well-known that every homology functor on the stable homotopy category is representable, so of the form E∗(X) = π∗(E ∧ X) for some spectrum E. However, Christensen, Keller, and Neeman [CKN01] have exhibited simple triangulated categories, such as the derived category of k[x, y] for sufficiently large fields k, for which not every homology functor is representable. In this paper, we show t...
